ATM Dawes Limit (sp?)

I was reading about Dawes Limit in an older ATM book (can't remember the 
title). Does anyone here know how this was found. It is something like, 
4.5/i, where i = the diameter of the mirror and the limit is close to the 
theoretical limit of resolving double stars. Or, something like that. If 
someone here knows how it was found then they'll know more than I do 
about it.
