I tried the "wet wooden dowel" method after seeing you recommend it here
-- it works, and works well.  I don't do it any other way any more.

I used to cut facets in with a saw or a Stanley knife -- it's nice not
to have little chips of pitch all over the place (including stuck to the
hair on my arms and my beard --- don't ask!) any more.
