The dielectric coatings actually depend on on 1/4 wave layers to create
interference to work ... it has to be precise to get the proper band of
light reflected.  Note, the QSP folks started out doing Lumicon's
bandpass filters (OIII, UHC, etc.), and it is this technology that was
adapted to mirrors (band-reflect rather than band-pass)
