Have you considered a 'Gregorian' telescope for your project?  They were a 
popular type for terrestrial viewing because of, relative ease of 
construction ( tho a bit fiddly to collumate) and an upright immage. The 
down side....Unless you have a very fast mirror, you have a large immage but 
a narrow field of view.

David I wish  to commend you for your effort and your public spirit in this 
project. I wish you well and hope the public appreciate and respect all you 
have done.
