Re: [ATM] 20" FS Polishing machine, shafts, etc....
Hello everyone!
Thanks to all that responded to my inquirey about
polishing machine spindle shaft diameters. It seems
that nowdays, to be a fully skilled ATM, machine
building is part of the skills one must master. I
think I am going to make up cardboard replica of the
blank, over arms, eccentrics etc, so I can see how
they interact.
In the ideal world, I would like to have a stroke that
swings to the left and right as per a normal
Strasbaugh type machine, but with an additonal
eccentric to add back and forth, so as the tool swings
from left to right, the second eccentric produces a W
stroke by pulling the tool forward and backwardd. I
guess this is sort of like a Draper style machine with
added left to right swing.
I suspect that once I start playing with the cardboard
cutouts, I may find that I have to revise my ideas as
to what is really possible. I may end up with just
standard two eccentics, with the second one adding a
bit of ovalness to the established stroke from the
first eccentric.
I have been trying to find pictures of a polisher with
two eccentrics, so I can get some idea of where they
might be placed on the frame of the machine. Not much
luck. I did find a picture of GW Ritchey's polishing
machine for the 60" on Mt. Wilson. Hmmmmmmm, too bad
it is crated away somewhere.
Thoughts on all this are always welcome
