My grinding/polishing/figuring machine has a 27" table and I've used a
50mm diameter shaft at the top running in a 4 point bearing backed up by a
roller bearing. The shaft steps down to 40mm at the bottom and runs
there in an angular contact bearing which is opposed and pre-loaded to
(from memory) about a tenth of the static load rating of the lower
bearing.
