I found the term "attenuator" in some older electronics articles
about microinjection hardware and that word stuck in my head,
partly by reinforcement by my use of electric guitar attenuators.
In the present case, I refer to speaker coils, yes. I think
these are essentially linear actuators, or something very similar.
Anyway, I have mentioned using these in the past and they are
excellent for very small linear motion. I think that is why they
worked so well for micromanipultors in microinjection systems.
For comparison, I have also used stepper motors where the motion
was not as smooth. For the purpose of precision alignment of
optical components that are already close to the mark, this can
work great.

Mentioning Don Clement, I have not heard from him in a while. Don,
