What attenuator ? Do you mean "speaker voice coils" ?

In Fourier Transform Infrared spectrophotometers (FTIR), a moving mirror is
moved by the voice coil motor.
It is also proposed , in big systems, for the fine tuning
(adaptive optics http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Ao_movie.gif)
precision is not the only issue, speed is also important.
Don Clement has recently posted on the voice coil motors use.
Knife edge can be efficiently controlled by voice coil motor (actuator),
thus avoiding shaking the tester by touching the knob. Movement of the KE
is precise and reproducible .

In some lucky humans hearing is very tone sensitive. This is why musical
(string) instruments
have to be often fine tuned. Wire spiders have greater reserve in required
tension
before they require "tuning". They are more tolerant, while those
humans mentioned above are usually not.
