Norm, You should have met my uncle, a cabinet maker with 50 years of experience....one handed yet!!!! <G>
I sent this to several others, because the "Reply All" button has been moved and I keep missing it.
Cut a hole that is big enough to slip around the tube in a piece of plywood, OSB, hardboard ("Masonite"), whatever. Use the paper method to draw a line around the tube, slip the plywood down to the line and hot-melt glue it into place from the back side. A saber/jig saw would be a better choice, or a smaller dia (5 1/2") circular trim saw. I used a trim saw and this method to cut a porch column for a neighbor a few years ago.
