If you are REALLY concerned about dried CeO, rouge, or whatever on the edge, throw a wrap or two of waterproof tape around the edge at the bevel (you do have a bevel that is clear of the edge, don't you???).  The old style black friction tape would work too.

Someone suggested a while back that investing in a set of the sheet glass handling suction cup handles would probably be a wise safety move.  You could maintain a firm grip while grinding/polishing. 

Then wax down the edge like surfers do and keep the glass clean.  (sorry.....I just heard an old Jan & Dean song from a "60's" CD!!! <G)
