I don't know much about this personally, but my son has looked into it.  
Some, many, most? chips have a coating to reduce IR because the chips 
are actually sensitive to IR.  My Sony camcorder does IR.  There is an 
individual who actuall specializes in removing the IR coating/filter 
from ccd chips for those wishing to use the IR sensitivity.
