[ATM] Making an exisiting mirror thinner

Let me preface by saying that I've been lurking on the list for
probably a year, but have never actually ground glass.  So I will
probably show my ignorance by asking what is probably a stupid
question:

If you had an existing full-thickness mirror (ground, polished, and
coated), and wanted to make it lighter by making it thinner, would it
be possible to simply grind off the back of the mirror?  For example,
take one inch off a two inch thick mirror?

At first blush, this sounds like it should be easy, but I'm guessing
there are probably practical difficulties in pulling it off (e.g.,
without getting grit on the polished front surface).  Then again, how
long would it take to grind one inch of glass?
