That's the quartz inversion point, the crystal structure changes at that
point and the result (at least as I understand it from dealing with silica
flour) is crystabolite.

That's a very interesting chart on the GE website. What is the
reason the hardness for both Quartz and Silica increases around 600 C
before dropping rapidly? Thanks.
