The photos are actually deceiving. In order to bring out the very faint far 
out regions affected by the apodizer, they are of low magnification and 
over-exposed. As a result, the central spike maxima - which is by far the 
most pronounced part of it - is "swallowed" by the greatly expanded star 
image. However, the intensity graphs clearly show that it is still there, 
about as much as for unapodized vanes. In other words, this apodizer frees 
you from what you  can't see anyway, while leaving in what is actually 
visible nearly unaffected.
