Maybe because many of us grew up learning and using g77 FORTRAN (and
C/C++), so R was not often required so much as an interesting programming
interface. Ditto for Matlab. BTW, if I need a graphical output, I embed
instructions for Gnuplot and feed the data file to Gnuplot. FORTRAN and
Gnuplot will not be extinct dinosaurs until those of us who use them
become extinct (I'm far from retirement). Gnuplot + g77 is how many of
the graphs I have posted on my webpages have been created since I can
remember being on this list (roughly 15 years).

For that matter, I still use a Linux box (ancient PC) and connect by
telnet using Pine and all works fine.
