Oh, that was too easy. I was thinking I had seen one of these made from
aluminum angle, or at least a picture. While trying to remember where, I
suddenly remembered an article that had a diagram. In ATMJ #11, an article
called "A Dialogue on Spider Diffraction" by H R Suiter and Bill Zmek. The
diagram is on page 15, and the idea is attributed to Andre Couder, as a
variant of the four-ellipse idea of A. Danjon. The simulated image does show
diffraction spikes around a star.
Note that there were many editorial errors in the original article, mostly
images not agreeing with the text. ATMJ #12 arrived with a replacement sheet
for a couple of the pages...
