Marco,

It is my understanding that because of the way the device works (something
about magnetic field sensors), its accuracy diminishes with proximity to
metal (even standing next to a car, for example).  I (and others) had
thought of using this as a pseudo-DSC as well, but unless you have an
all-wood scope, I'm not sure it would work.  

This month's Astronomy or Sky and Telescope had a review of the SkyScout,
and mentioned this issue.  Check out the review for more info.
