On November 9th the transit of Mercuary will occur.  New Zealand will be 
well placed to observe this event and the time is also convenient for many 
folk. Many of the astronomical societies are making plans for public viewing 
and of course sun filters and the masking of telescopes is a of concern.

I would appreciate comments from the list re home made filters and filter 
material, bearing in mind that here in NZ with our small population and 
somewhat isolated position we don't have ready access to to some of the more 
exotic material that others enjoy. We just have to make do with what is 
available.

For years I have been viewing the sun thrugh a filter made of three layers 
of  'survival blanket' without any ill effects but now I am told that it 
doesn't filter the UV or Infa red. Any comments?

 Also, any good ideas or plans for a simple projection screen. I have one 
made of a large plastic container,.the neck fits over the EP which shines on 
a screen at the bottom. The image can be viewed from the back or through a 
gap in the side. It works well but looks ugly and is not very stable. I 
would like something more stable, asthetic and childproof.

Thanks for any suggestions............Please Do not flood the list with dire 
warnings.  We are well aware of the dangers involved.
