I have read in some electronics trade circles about problems with these 
Ionic Breeze things causing synthetic rubber and plastics to break down. 
  The guys who first noticed it were VCR repair techs who noticed they 
were replacing a lot of belts in very new machines.

I wouldn't use one around a scope drive belt or plastic parts.
