Re: [ATM] A polishing we will go!

I was there when it happened, or at least somewhere nearby. It was clearly a real scratch, not a squeak.

 Ed was using a really ancient polishing tool of unknown provenance that had been cast in a really weird mold that is very hard to describe, and that had had some glass tiles attached to the top, with the pitch cast on top of that. Some of the pitch was coming off, but the big problem was that the tiles were flaking off, too. Ed had had this tool in his garage (or something) for a couple of years - he wasn't the maker of it. Donno who was.
We found a better polishing tool and are using that.
The cross-section of the tool looked a bit like this:

===============================   < -- the pitch
----- ------  ------  -------- ----- --------- -------- -------  < -- the glass tiles
\                                                            /
 \         ____             _____                   /
  \____|       |_______|         |_________/

We are really not sure what was used to cast this crazy thing. It needs to get put into the trash, IMO, because it will cause anything that it touches to get scratched.

(I am undecided on whether squeaking is bad or good. I am positive that it is important to use filtered or distilled water when mixing your polishing slurries; well or municipal water supplies, even though they may taste great (or not) may have little particles that can scratch or sleek your mirror)

I just wondered- you say you heard a sound when generating those scrathes. I hate to have you relive that moment but I wonder if you could describe it. Is it similar to the squeking when the wet is almost dry ? Knowing this sound might help me out in the future.
I've been figuring away and lately my lap has been squeaking like
crazy. No scratches or sleeks though, who knows. Maybe a wee bit cold. Bit unrelated, just chiming in.
