This list is usually a whole lot more polite than some I have seen.
Occasionally someone sounds more forceful or discouraging than they
probably mean to be.

Remember that written language is a poor substitute for face to face
conversation, and that most of us are not great writers.

I have seen people post ideas that very likely won't work, and get a
number of negative comments from those whose experience or knowledge
indicates to them that the idea won't work.  Is that wrong?

For instance, once or twice a year, someone new to mirror making gets
the bright idea to make a mirror of aluminum metal instead of glass with
an aluminum coating.  They are not aware that the idea has been tried
multiple times by bright and skilled people with very little success.
So, should they get upset when the greybeards on the list tell them that?
