Re: [ATM] There seems to be a reoccurring motif among this list.

One good way to use the ATM list is to start a discussion, and locate
others of similar interest. Continued discussion may occur on the list,
or may move to private conversations.

Naturally any discussion group is a social situation, and there'll be
the usual noise of misunderstandings. Also, people come with their ways
of thinking. For instance, just to think of one of the *many* WOT that
I've read on the list, someone might be all about KISS, and therefore
question why a complex engineering solution is being proposed at all.

Really, this boils down to two questions: 1. are you building the right
*thing*, and 2. are you building it *right*.

I strive for innovative designs. Much of the time I receive heavy flak
(usually privately in the form of email blasts from well known more
conservative folk). I read it to see what their real point is. Maybe
it's just not wanting to change, or being upset that their emotional
investment in current popular trends is unwarranted. But lots of time
the flak boils down to well considered questions such as, is it too
complex, why do this anyhow, and so on. I rarely get upset over the
flak - it's just human nature from what I can see.

All of us are very busy professionally and in our hobby. Reflecting
upon my tendencies, I respond in two principle categories. First, if
the initial post sounds intelligent, demonstrates some understanding of
the issues, and if I have time and feel that I have something to
contribute, I'll respond. Lastly, if the initial post looks to be from
someone who is asking or wishing knowledge that isn't easily garnered
from a simple online search or by reading the easily obtainable
literature, and if I have time and feel that I can be helpful, I'll
respond.
