[ATM] There seems to be a reoccurring motif among this list.
I've snipped 2 recent comments (below and in thread context) that
describe my experience and perceptions about the ATM list. Actually I
believe it to be cultural (perhaps testosterone) in nature because, ATM's
have always done things on the simple and cheap. I am by no means attacking
anyone here, I'm simply stating my and apparently others experiences.
However, there those of us that are taking it to the next level. For
example; I'm working on a design for a 2 meter D/t=10 f/8 RC with adaptive
optics, but this is probably the first time and last you'll hear of it.
There are people on this list with an incredible amount of
experience and knowledge that would be of immense use to me and others.
However, it's not worth the time and adrenaline to start up a discussion to
find those people.
How are ATM's (or groups of ATM's) like myself who want to build on
a large scale and have the capability to spend the necessary monies to do
it, going to relate with those who won't or can't. I'm not looking down my
nose at anyone, as some of the most ingenious solutions are made by those
just trying to get the job done anyway they can. I can't wait to see the tin
can version of adaptive optics. :)
I'll offer no solutions to my perceptions, but perhaps the group
consciousness as a whole could.
Thanks for your time.

Of course I might change my mind, but performing experiments and
disseminating data generally doesn't earn you a lot of gratitude from
the ATM community.

You'll get no argument from me on that one. The reason I didn't
mention the I word is that it usuallyy gets shot down in flames
as unecessary, expensive, complicated etc.
