Thanks to Peter Ceravolo having resumed production of reference
elements I've assembled my own Fizeau interferometer. I've
successfully done phase shifting interferometry with it. I've done
the extensive algorithm development needed to process the massive
amounts of data(*) phase shifting supplies. That entailed digging
into relatively recent research literature and buying an absurdly
expensive book so I could learn how to do 2 dimensional phase
unwrapping. I've even published the software and make it available for free.

Since phase shifting interferometry is generally acknowledged to be
the gold standard in optical testing the only reason I'd have to try
Hartmann testing would be to perform a comparative analysis of
different test methods. I don't feel motivated to do that right now.
In fact I think my days of cutting out masks are done forever. Of
course I might change my mind, but performing experiments and
disseminating data generally doesn't earn you a lot of gratitude from
the ATM community.

Anyway, thanks for answering my question.

(*) The largest single data set I've analyzed had about 116K pixels
in each of 112 frames for a total of ~13 million data points. I've
presented evidence that features as small as a few centimeters in
size and ~5nm in amplitude can be detected.
