With all respect to Jim, what empirical evidence exists to support 
that argument? How many people besides Jim Burrows have even tried it?

Now if I were going to argue for a "simple" test methodology of more 
or less known accuracy I'd suggest building a Bath interferometer. 
That's not the most practical idea for a one-off project, but it's 
certainly doable by any reasonably dedicated ATM.
