Tom, you will want first to make those light sources very small
(a bit of optics to magnify the image to a very small area like
an artifical star image) for the light source.  After that, any
decent amount of magnification (maybe 20x) should be fine enough
to see the reimage of the light and check the focus of the image.
Needless to say, you will be wanting to know of these distances
to a thou or so.
