David,

For cold (or slightly warm) pressing the mirror on the pitch lap maybe 
you could build a dam around the lap/mirror a few inches high and place 
some small weights, like marbles or ball bearings, inside the dam. That 
way you would get a nice even weight over the back of the mirror, and 
perhap avoid breaking the mirror.

Wow, 3/16 is really thin!
