A parallel question might be: How did we all start using "Crescent 
Wrench" as the name for the adjustable wrenches (spanners for 
Richard); Or "Thermos" for Dewar bottles, or "Crapper" for cast 
porcelan toilets?

In the early 1960s, whilst living near Los Angeles, I used to buy my 
Sonotube from Burke Concrete Accessories (10 miles up the freeway), 
and noticed that their tubes were later called Burketube.  After a 
few original purchases Sonovoid was discovered. It is/was a version 
used to cast hollows within concrete pours and thus had the pesky 
waxy waterproofing on the exterior surface which was much easier to 
remove for painting and fiberglassing purposes.  Also the sizing for 
Sonovoid was as outside diameters instead of inside diameters. See:
