AFIK, the grits that optical people use are better controlled
than either of those.
You may want to stop by a sandblaster and see if you can pick up
a bit of 80 grit SiC blasting sand.  Even the stuff that has
already been through the gun a few times will be fine for the
coarse grinding that you need to do.  You can then jump to the
220 grit with no problems other than a few more wets needed to
get through that grit size.
