I've refinished several mirrors.  With the first one, the coating was
stripped with ferric chloride (etching solution); all the rest have been
polished off.  I see no difference in the final product, or at any point
along the way.

It might be faster to strip it if it is overcoated.  That was the reason
I stripped the first one.  It took about 40 minutes for the solution to
eat through the overcoat and get the aluminum off.  BTW, I was advised
to dilute the solution, so I may have thinned it too much.  By contrast,
the others were polished off in 5-10 minutes.
