[ATM] Stripping to re-figure?

The group's opinion, please:
If one were to refigure a mirror, is it necessary/suggested
to strip the coating? I've seen suggestions that one merely
polish off the aluminum, but it would seem to be better to
strip the coating first. Suggestions?
