I normally use 5 zone mask sets as 5 zones is usually about the right number
for the focal lengths that usually get done.  I say mask sets because I do a
mask for the even zones and a mask for the odd zones.  This keeps from
needing to tape the mask back together after the knife cuts too far.
As to photographing the shadows. a simple lens as close to the KE should do
a good photograph.  An article on my website explains how to use a camera to
image the test results and while it is biased towards a video camera, the
precepts are the same for a film camera.
The real proof of whether you are hyperbolic or not is in the reading of the
zones and their data reduction.
