John Dobson gave one of his stimulating talks at RAS as few months ago. He
joked about someone wanting to haul a telescope up Mt Whitney. I remembered
seeing near the summit a stone shelter built with funding from the
Smithsonian in 1909 to study comic rays. Someone actually did haul a 16" up
