You can experiment with the viewing quality by making an off-axis mask for
your newt where the opening fits between the spider legs. While perhaps not
exactly the same result, a few minutes with a razor and a sheet of cardboard
is a lot easier than trying to grind one.

What you are describing is an "unobstructed" or "off-axis" netwonian. I have
not personally tried making one, but I understand they are hard, as the
curve
