[ATM] re: Where Do Old Scopes Go?

Hey, Jay! Up at Stellafane they have preserved many of the old scopes you'll
see in ATM#1. Of course the Porter Turret and the Pink Clubhouse are still in
daily use, but one of the members has also restored an original Springfield
mount scope and displays it on Mr. Porters' own pier during the Stellafane
Convention. The Springfield Telescope Makers also have a museum nearby, at the
Harkness House in Springfield VT and preserve several of the telescopes made by
the original group of Springfield Telescope Makers that so intrigued Albert
Ingalls of Scientific American. Carrying on the tradition, the STMs are building a
new observatory to house another Springfield Mount telescope. Check out the
museum page at:

Now, where do old telescope makers go?
that "other" Jay in CT

<<Years ago in the old Hayden I spotted in a display case one of Allyn J
Thompson's original 6" f8s. Seeing it just blew me away. Here was the
scope from a book that I had studied as a kid till I knew its practically
every word. Of course in the new Haydn, with its light shows and whatever
other moronicism there's no place for something homemade.
Besides Thompson, another absolute favorite book was (is) Paul's
Telescopes for Stargazing, with its galleries of homemade scopes.
Does anyone know what's become of any of the old iconic instruments,
Tombaugh's 16" that David Levy saw Saturn's spokes with, Clarence Custer's
12 1/2", Thompson's 6"ers, or any of the scopes in Paul's book? Where do
all the great old scopes go? Good and loving homes, I hope. Anyone have any
stories about favorite great old scopes?
    Jay>>
