Two years of work at the US Embassy in Tashkent, Uzbekistan (a very
political sort of job)...made that point painfully obvious as I sat on one
side of the table, listened to what the American would say...hear it
translated by the Embassy translator into Russian...hear the Russian answer
by the Uzbek...hear it translated by the Embassy translator into
English...and hear what is lost/added/changed at every step of the process.

When we spoke technical issues (helicopter avionics upgrades)...translation
was fairly straight forward. When we spoke political (or program
management) issues...oh, my aching head. Translation could be difficult at
best because of the 'worlds apart' issue of American thinking contrasted
with centrally-controlled-police-state thinking.
