My chief problem with the Lecleires book, "Manual for Amateur Telescope
Makers", is that I have mislaid my copy. But I started telescope making
with a library copy of Texereau and some technical education, so perhaps I
did not notice "omissions" mentioned by others.
The Lecleires have a good sections on Foucault, data reduction, recognizing
zonal errors, and specific strokes that should be used to make glass behave
(i.e. toe the parabolic line). They deal specifically with larger, faster
(f/4.5) optics , which is exactly the kind of telescope many ATMs (and
Justin, the originator of this thread) want to build these days, even though
it is a much greater challenge than f/6.
Texereau wrote one of the Prefaces, Dick Suiter the other. In summary, Mr.
Suiter says "...Texereau or the Lecleires? Don't be silly, get both".
I agree.
