[ATM] Where Do Old Scopes Go? OT?
This may be OT but there was a similarly OT thread about Where Did Texereau
Go a while back so I'll chance it. Besides, there's a foot of snow outside
and it's still falling. What else am I going to be doing besides annoying
the group?
Years ago in the old Hayden I spotted in a display case one of Allyn J
Thompson's original 6" f8s. Seeing it just blew me away. Here was the
scope from a book that I had studied as a kid till I knew its practically
every word. Of course in the new Haydn, with its light shows and whatever
other moronicism there's no place for something homemade.
Besides Thompson, another absolute favorite book was (is) Paul's
Telescopes for Stargazing, with its galleries of homemade scopes.
Does anyone know what's become of any of the old iconic instruments,
Tombaugh's 16" that David Levy saw Saturn's spokes with, Clarence Custer's
12 1/2", Thompson's 6"ers, or any of the scopes in Paul's book? Where do
all the great old scopes go? Good and loving homes, I hope. Anyone have any
stories about favorite great old scopes?
