After hearing so much about burning pitch, I'll relate one of the methods
that has started being in usage now that the group that I'm with is in a
private garage for the class.
Grab the propane torch (MAPP gas isn't needed here) and just start putting
the flame to the lap, passing it back and forth to keep it from boiling on
the surface.  A 1 minute run of the full power at a good angle to the pitch
will heat it enough to do a Dobson blocking and press.  Usually 2 or 3 times
at this ends up with a decent lap.
