I put the pitch in a boiler arrangement (two pans, one on top of the other)
or just put it into the water on some stands so that water can circulate
underneath.
I've even done the whole lap making process under water in one case as the
glass that I was working on had a reputation for cracking under thermal
stress so I just did the whole job in the water with gentle changes of temp
as needed.
You will find that at boiling temp, the pitch will flow fairly freely
although it doesn't pour like water.
