  While many of the books referenced so far do have some outmoded
information, there also is a wealth of information that is as applicable
today as when these books were penned 50, 60 years ago. Even the
Kreige/Berry book has outmoded information.

  But how would a newbie know what to avoid, or what to model?

Personally, I'd go with Tex's book as it covers the basics on mirror
making the best. Compare what you find there against the archives, and ask
questions to your hearts content here. Every one of us were newbies, and
this list will support you.
