An electric hot plate of some sort is the best way to go.  Don't ever
even think about using a burner or stove with an open flame (although I
did do this in my youth and survived).  I've found many cheap hot plates
with good temperature control at garage or yard sales and they work
safely.  Just be careful and not in a hurry.
