Pitch melting and associated dangers are quite a few.
One of them is if melted pitch comes somehow on the
skin. It will stick and cause skin burns before it can be
removed efficiently.
Running around in panick with burning pitch container
 is something that may lead to this. In that case even
 innocent observers (kids) are endangered.
If by chance overheated pitch catches the flame, just
cover the container with suitable cover PREPARED IN
ADVANCE and remove calmly from stove.
Wearing gloves will also not harm you.

Investment in small second hand  electric single plate heater will
pay off ( and prolonged your happy marriage).
