I can't speak to the absolute danger of melting over gas, but I do know pitch 
itself is quite flammable. Ya know, $10 is rather cheap insurance...

P.S. Pitch melts at about 150 degrees F. It does not heat up in a microwave 
(don't ask) although you can melt it under water in a microwave.
