[ATM] RE: How hot is your scope
I think the high performance, aerospace types are now using vinyl ester
resins in some applications. Don't know much about them, but I think I
remember they have higher softening temperature after cure. I think
they also require high curing temperature.
Some epoxys can have their softening temperature raised by a post cure
baking.
A number of model airplane types seem to be getting by with leaving
graphite epoxy surfaces black. Among these is Mark Drela an
aeronautical engineering prof at MIT who builds about the most radical
model sailplanes going. (and also was lead engineer on the worlds
first, and perhaps only human powered hydrofoil) I think West system
epoxy is often used by these types. I have seen pictures of Mark's
launch technique. I suspect if his epoxy softened, there would be some
folded wings.
Ask over at the Charles River Radio Control club. (Google will turn
them up.) Mark is a quite well known member of the club. Somebody
there will know, and Mark can probably quote chapter and verse.
