Ellen, the main reason polyester is preferred commercially is that it is
much cheaper than epoxy. As to epoxy being too brittle for boat hulls is
nonsense. Some of the finest (and most expensive) hulls are constructed
using epoxy. Marine epoxies are readily available from companies such as
West Marine and are well suited to telescope construction but are much
more expensive.
