My grinding is done on a lazy susan bearing with a big chunk of steel on top
of it for weight.  A layer of plywood finishes off the top so that I don't
have glass hitting steel.
Operation consists of just kicking the chunk with my forearm to move the
"barrel" around a bit as I grind.  I usually sit down for the working of the
glass on a somewhat high stool which keeps me at the right height.
If you go to a spindle, make an overarm for it so that you can just press
down on the glass as the spindle turns.
