I never have understood the fear of a pen-knife (the smaller "swiss army
knives", for example), when there is no problem with 7-inch wooden daggers
(probably in unlimited quantities) [these are most commonly recognized as
your common #2 wooden pencil]; all mechanical pens and pencils, all of the
common 'loop and tang' belt buckles, ...

What is the REAL offensive weapon difference between grandma's knitting
needles and your #2 Faber pencil? ... except that grandma may not have the
stamina to be THAT offensive!

But then, I guess it impresses the gullible and uniformed and lets the
politicians cover their anatomy.

The reality is that it was "after the fact" and is not significant enough to
warrant a response.
I would imagine those poor people are run off their feet trying to keep pace
with a piece of hysteric legislation designed to appease a certain
population segment.
Your query was probably filed for future reference but would not be likely
to ever see the light of day again.

A couple of months ago, I had a pocket knife with a blade of 1. 5 inches
confiscated. It was stamped with a firm's logo and stated that it was a "50
year" commerative. I stated it was a keepsake, issued by a friend's firm. I
was left with my 6 inch long steel cased ballpoint pen and my 12 inch steel
engineer's rule to take on board. The staff could not see any incongruency
in their selections, even after I pointed out that a pen could be rammed
into the eye socket into the brain.

I further asked if the item could be given to cabin staff and returned to me
on disembarking. Not to be so.
