And yet, I managed to accidentally take a 12-gauge
shotgun slug shell through inspection at Washington
National Airport (DCA) without anybody noticing it at
all. Only when I got to my destination and had been
there for a few days did I notice I had forgotten to
remove the last shell out of my backpack! (No, I
didn't even get any deer last year. In Maryland, you
can't use rifles to hunt deer - you have to use
shotguns with deer slugs.) I decided to leave the
unused shell in the state where I had arrived, rather
than risk taking it back home.

I later sent an email to the Dept of Homeland Security
telling them what had happened, and asking what would
have happened if my gaffe had been discovered. I got
no response at all.
