[ATM] re: Thieves OT-but still

The biggest flaw in Homeland Security - - - low wages won't attract
people with the knowledge to make sound scientific decisions. They watch too
much TV.
Making derogatory remarks while being held for three hours in limbo at
the airport can get you a not too comfortable cell and a missed flight.
Packing your two ounces of Sodium in Diesel oil so it won't turn into
sodium hydroxide will get you an arrest - -- and on and on. Putting your
scientific equipment in impregnable metal boxes assures you the boxes will
arrive torn open.
A pint-sized container of silicone grease arrives full of finger
gouges with enough of it on your packed clothing to protect you against a
lightning strike.
A 15 pound amicci prism arrives in a box that has been sealed with a
full roll of 2 inch wide mover's tape with the water residue still in the
prism's housing.
I am relieved that I didn't decide to carry the six ounce sample of
Uranium ore to the Colorado School of Mines for analysis, can we say
Guantanamo boys and girls.
Through the years I have learned to approach customs first and get a
certificate issued, it's a hassle, but better than having some Neanderthal
destroying my instruments. Pack your equipment with the knowledge that you
will be required to open it up and lay it out in front of them. Have all
your letters of invitation handy as well as affidavits of recognition with
phone numbers of relevant officials. A list of all instrument serial numbers
too.
If you do a lot of overseas travelling get your passport renewed
annually to minimize the entrance and exit stamps.
